How to take a break during exams

Taking breaks during the exam period is so important to maintain your mental and physical wellbeing.

There are many ways to take breaks during exams, including physical activities, connecting with nature and socialising with friends. Taking a break can even be treating yourself to that fancy coffee or trying a new recipe.

These are my favourite ways to take a break:

1. Going for a walk

Bath has some of the most gorgeous walks, whether it’s a nature walk along the skyline or a walk through the town centre admiring the shops and historic buildings.

My favourite place for a walk is to Sham Castle. Once there, there are the most beautiful views over the town centre. It’s also a great option for first time walkers as it’s only a stone’s throw away from the University Campus.

2. Diving into a good book

One of the ways I love to take a break is getting into bed with a cup of tea and reading a good book. For me, this lets me really relax and forget about any looming exams.

3. Socialising

Chatting with friends or family is great for improving mood and staying connected during the exam period. Even if it’s just a quick catch up with a flatmate, talking to others can really help to reduce stress.

Maybe consider organising a group study session with your friends or people on your course. This way you can take regular breaks and avoid isolating yourself.  

Alternatively, consider joining friends for meals. It's a perfect occasion to relax, enjoy good company, and take a mental break from exam preparation.

4. Exercise

Whether you are a fitness fanatic or just enjoy a stretch, getting up and moving is really important while taking breaks from exams. I find just some simple stretches after I’ve been sat at my desk for a long time really help to make me feel refreshed.
