World Day for Cultural Diversity

Posted 2 days ago

It may be a mouthful to say, but it's so significant!

World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development takes place on 21 May, and its meaning and importance is absolutely something to be celebrated.

This global event is led by UNESCO and supported by the United Nations to enable people all around the world to reflect on what diversity is within our culture and cultural heritage. It is an important time to think about why cultural diversity continues to matter in today's world, and to keep the topic of discussion open in the issues affecting people of different cultures.

International life in Bath

At the University of Bath, the importance of our international students and the cultural significance they imprint on the city is something that makes Bath such a special and diverse place to live.

As students and staff alike (both international and domestic), we are able to learn something new every day and celebrate cultural diversity, such as:

  • recognising how cultural diversity enriches our society intellectually and emotionally
  • understanding the importance of a diverse culture for social cohesion
  • creating a more sustainable global development

How to get involved and celebrate World Day for Cultural Diversity

Whether you are an international student thinking about coming to Bath, or you're already a student, there are so many ways for you jump into this awareness day and celebrate!

  • Have a day where you either go out into the city and try a new cuisine, or you make a home cooked meal with different recipes from around the world. A personal favourite of mine is the popular Korean dish, Bibimpap
  • Have an international movie night. There are loads of incredible foreign films that will immerse you in the culture, and you can even go the extra mile to watch the film in the original language with English subtitles. If you want to join others for a community movie night, ResLife Events are holding a free World Day of Cultural Diversity movie night, featuring 'Coco'!
