What we do to cut down food waste

Helping you, the environment and local community

Did you know that the UK throws away around 9.5 million tonnes of food waste every year?! This is why we're so passionate about taking small but significant sustainable steps to make a difference.

Here's some of the ways we're cutting down on food waste, and how you can get involved:

The Munch Box Scheme

Say yes to surplus food! The Munch Box scheme lets you buy surplus food from selected cafes and restaurants on campus for just £3. All you need to do is bring your own container at the end of hot counter service.

Find out exactly how it works and where to go here

Similarly, you can also find leftover food from The Market and Fresh on the Too Good To Go app at discounted prices.

Our community larder

Our campus larder has a fridge and freezer where any short-dated food from Fresh, pre-packed items from hospitality or food donated by you are kept for collection. Find out more about where to find it and what you can donate here

You can collect any food for free, but please only take what you need and know you will use.

To help you get started, we've also got loads of recipes at hand that you can try that include some of the most popular ingredients donated here like oats and beans

P.S. Don't forget about our other food donation points on and off campus where you can leave items in donation trollies at the end of term (as long as they're in-date and non-perishable) to give to a local charity and Bath families in need.

Turning food waste into energy

It may sound crazy, but yes, our kitchen food waste is now taken to an anaerobic digestion plant and turned int renewable electricity!

This process also produces a digestate bio-fertiliser, which is then used on the crops on the surrounding farmland. It's a win, win.

Reusing our coffee grounds

Even your morning coffee is part of our green initiative! All of your used coffee grounds are composted on site and used as a soil enricher on the University grounds.

Not only does this reduce waste but improves our green spaces to keep our campus looking beautiful - all thanks to your daily brew.

These are just a handful of things that we do to stay sustainable, and help you stay sustainable, on campus. Find out what you can do in halls here
