What is the Community Larder?

Saving you money, saving the planet and open for business!

The Community Larder (which launched on campus in 2023) is a fantastic initiative designed to support the Uni community by providing access to free food items while promoting sustainability and reducing waste. The Community Larder has been a great success so far, with thousands of items being repurposed for use by students and staff.

How does the Community Larder work?

The idea behind the Community Larder is simple: it's a place where members of the university community can leave and collect items throughout the year. This includes a large number of items left behind by students moving out of university accommodation, which are donated to the larder to be reused by others. The aim is to reduce waste and ensure that these items find a new home instead of going to landfill. It also will help you directly with your finances by providing free essentials through these high cost of living times.

New Community Larder in the city centre

To make the larder more accessible to all students, a new Community Larder has been opened in the city centre, located in the café area of the Virgil Building. This addition ensures that students living in the city can also easily access free food items whenever they need them.

Key ingredients now available for free

Thanks to the success of the Community Larder, the initiative has received funding to provide additional support for all students. This funding will be used to purchase five key food ingredients every week, which students can collect from the larder for FREE.
