You’re about to embark on a new journey at uni, so it’s time to get ready for the big move... but do you know what essentials you will need to take with you? No? Don't worry because we've got your packing list covered!
Before you buy!
We strongly recommend you hold your horses on buying certain items before you have full confirmation on your room/accommodation. For example, you could rush in and buy everything for a single bed and then end up with a double (rooms can vary in size within the same accommodation).
Here are some items you don’t want to forget:
- Documents (like driving licence, university acceptance letter, etc.)
- Laptop
- Money
- Photos or decorations from home (they’ll help you settle in!)
- Medicine (remember to sign up with a GP near campus too)
- Bedding — pillows, duvet, covers, pillowcases, and sheets
- Clothes
- Towels
- Toiletries
- Stationery
- Sports gear
- Cleaning supplies
- Kitchenware
- Reusable food container
- Extension leads and chargers
- Books
- Tea/coffee and mugs (you can buy a reusable Exchange cup on campus too)
- Some snacks to have until you go food shopping
There are also some things that are NOT allowed at uni:
(Please note some of these will already be provided in your halls)
- Iron
- Kettle
- Toaster
- Deep-fat fryer
- Microwave oven
- Fridge
- Freezer
- Washing machine
- Tumble dryer
- Dishwasher
- Gas appliance
- Space heater
- Paraffin heater or oil heater
- Portable fan heater
- Electric fire
- Electric blanket
- 13-amp socket adapter plugs
- Barbecue
- Flammable liquids and accelerants
- Candles, fairy lights and lighting (except LED fairy lights and free-standing desk lamps)
- Meat and dairy products from outside the European Union
Please don't bring any kitchen electricals with you. We recommend waiting to see what you need, this keeps work spaces clear. You might decide to purchase additional items with your new household – no kitchen needs 10 air fryers.
Remember that all electricals must conform to the appropriate British Standard and has to be purchased inside the European Union and requires the CE mark. If any non-compliant items are found they will be confiscated.
Second Hand Stalls
We also run second-hand (sustainability) stalls in September, which is another great option for getting those last essential bits (guaranteed an airer, we always have tonnes) without spending a fortune.
