A microwave is a quick and convenient way to heat, reheat and defrost food.
Microwave controls can vary between models. Most microwaves allow you to heat food for a set amount of time and adjust the power level, while some also include preset programmes for tasks such as defrosting or heating specific foods.
Many microwaves use buttons or a dial to set the cooking time. We recommend checking the model number of your microwave and finding the relevant instruction manual in our online manuals library, where you’ll find detailed guidance on the controls and features available on your kitchen appliance.
Heating food safely
- Place food in a microwave-safe container, such as a plastic or glass Tupperware.
- Cover loosely to help prevent splatters.
- Stir food halfway through heating where possible.
- Check that food is heated all the way through before eating.
- Take care when removing hot food and containers. You might need to use oven gloves to remove safely.
- You should never put metal, foil, or dishes with metallic decoration inside of the appliance.
Cleaning the microwave
Keeping the microwave clean and free from food can prevent unwanted smells and keeps it running at peak efficiency.
Every time you use the microwave, check for spills and wipe as soon as possible. You can use a damp cloth, antibac wipes, or kitchen roll with cleaning spray for this. Sometimes, it is easier to remove the turntable and wash in the sink. Leave the door open after cleaning to allow it to dry.
Top tips
- Cover food to reduce mess.
- Stir food for more even heating.
