Leave no trace when you move out

How to move out of halls sustainably

As you're packing up your room, it's tempting to throw everything into bin bags and be done with it. But before you do, think about the impact your move-out could have, not just on the planet but on the people around you too.

Moving out of halls in a more sustainable way doesn't have to be hard, there's so many quick and easy things you can do!

Sort it, don't scrap it

Sort your wanted items into the following categories and put them into the designated donation crates or bags in your building:

  • Clean kitchen equipment (mugs, pans, glassware etc.)
  • Electrical (including batteries, cables and chargers)
  • Mixed items (good condition stationary, books, games, shoes etc.)
  • Non-perishable food (packets and cans)

Give your clothes a second chance

Got any unwanted clothes? Drop them off at a British Heart Foundation donation point – either on campus or in the city.

Your clothes could help fund life-saving research and find a new home with someone who needs them.

Share your leftover food

Leftover food doesn't have to go in the bin. You can donate unopened, non-perishable items to our Community Larder, helping others while cutting down on waste.

Not sure what you can donate? Here's a list of everything you can donate to the Community Larder

When moving out in a rush, a lot of good-quality stuff ends up in landfill. However, when you donate and recycle properly not only are you helping the planet, you're supporting fellow students, staff and local charities too.

So this year, leave no trace but a positive impact.
