Cleaning: Student Accommodation Edition

Clean Space = Clear Mind 🧘‍♀️

How clean should your accommodation be?

We know that after a long day of lectures, cleaning may not be your top priority. But keeping your accommodation clean isn’t just about passing a spot check—it’s about making your space comfortable, hygienic, and somewhere you want to live! So what does "clean" really mean?

Here are some pointers on what would be a good expectation for cleaning in your living space.

Bedroom: Keep It Cozy and Tidy

Your bedroom should be a clean, clutter-free space where you can relax and focus. Here’s what you need to keep an eye on:

  • Sink (if you have one): No hair, no blockages, and taps should be working with no weird filters attached.
  • Bed: Mattress protector on, clean bedding (not heavily stained), and no leftover food or spills. Clothes and stuff should be put away enough that you can actually sleep comfortably.
  • Seating: No junk piled up, no food debris, and no mystery stains.
  • Desk: Clear enough to study, no food mess or spills.
  • Surfaces: Keep them free from food, dust, and spills.
  • Floors: You should be able to walk from your bed to the window and door without tripping over stuff. No damp spots or mould allowed.
  • Bins: Empty them before they overflow and keep food waste out!

Ensuite Bathroom: A Fresh and Functional Space

Your bathroom should be a fresh, clean place—not a science experiment! Here’s what to check:

  • Sink: No hair, no blockages, taps working properly.
  • Toilet: Clean (limescale stains are okay), no blockages, and the seat should be dry and in good condition.
  • Shower/Bath: No hair or blockages, taps and showerheads working fine, and free from grime.
  • Shelves: No random litter, food (seriously, why would there be food?), or damp/mould build-up.
  • Floors: Clear from belongings and mess, no puddles, no mould.
  • Bin: Empty regularly—no overflowing trash!

Kitchenette: Keep It Safe and Sanitary

No one likes cooking in a messy kitchen, so keep things in check:

  • Sink: No food scraps, grease, or blockages. Don’t let dirty dishes pile up!
  • Hobs: Wipe off food spills and grease, and make sure dials and buttons are clean.
  • Appliances (Oven, Microwave, etc.): No burnt food bits or grease build-up.
  • Shelves: Keep them tidy—no loose crumbs, grease, or open/unwrapped food. And definitely no rotting food!
  • Worktops & Surfaces: Wipe them down—no food scraps, grease, or mess.
  • Floors: No crumbs, no spills, and make sure you can move around easily.
  • Bins: Don’t let them overflow—keep the lid closed and check for signs of pests.

The Bottom Line

Keeping your place clean doesn’t have to be a chore. Just stay on top of things, and it’ll be a much nicer space to live in. Plus, it helps you avoid nasty surprises during spot checks!
