Craving rice or noodles? Want a balanced meal with protein, carbs and veggies? Need to stay within a student friendly budget? Head on down to the Fountain Canteen to try their new Japanese counter.
I recently had the opportunity to try some Japanese food and I’m here to dish out the details! Above, I’ve included a picture of what kind of food the counter offers and how much each meal costs. Beside the menu is a freezer with Little Moons mochi in it. They had the Belgian Chocolate & Hazelnut, Creamy Coconut and Passionfruit & Mango flavours available. At the very end of the counter, where you collect your food, is a little seasoning station so that you can tailor your meal however you want.
When I went, I grabbed a chicken katsu rice bowl, a hoi sin pork noodle bowl and chocolate flavoured Little Moons which totalled up to £13.95. After seeing the food, I finally understood why the noodle bowl was 40p more than the rice bowl - spoiler alert: it’s because they serve bigger portions of the noodle bowls. Hopefully, this should help you decide what you want to get depending on how hungry you are.
The food was not only delicious and very filling but well balanced and affordable. My personal favourite were the Little Moons but I am biased because I have a sweet tooth. It’s definitely a fun counter to go to because you can try foods you never have before.
I’ve never had hoi sin pork before but now it might just be my first pick if I go to a Japanese restaurant.
The menu is also very useful in the way it labels the food for people with dietary requirements - vegetarian, vegan and Halal.
