Easy ways to prevent mould

Posted 5 hours ago

Has it been raining recently?

...Yes, it has been raining in Bath! When it rains, it's natural for rooms to experience a bit more condensation than usual, which can easily lead to dampness/surface mould if you're not careful. While mould is common in many places (especially in the UK’s damp climate), there are some easy steps you can take to help keep your room fresh and free of any unwanted guests like mould or silverfish.

Why mould forms

Mould thrives in damp environments, particularly in spaces with poor ventilation. When moisture builds up from rain or condensation, it provides the perfect conditions for mould to grow. Silverfish (tiny insects) also love the damp and they will usually try to make it their new home...

But don’t worry, this can happen in any home or building, and the good news is that with a few simple actions, you can prevent unwanted mould.

Easy steps to fight mould and condensation

  1. Keep your room well ventilated - One of the best ways to prevent mould is to improve air circulation. Open your windows for a few minutes each day, especially after cooking or showering, to allow moist air to escape. If it’s too cold to keep windows open for long, even a short burst of fresh air can make a difference.
  2. Wipe away condensation - Mould often forms on wet surfaces, so it's helpful to regularly wipe down windowsills and walls where condensation tends to gather. A quick wipe with a cloth can prevent moisture from sitting around too long and becoming a problem.
  3. Invest in damp absorbers - If your room tends to get quite damp, you might want to consider investing in damp absorbers (which are easy to find at most supermarkets). These can help reduce the moisture in the air and stop condensation from building up.
  4. Laundry advice - Avoid drying clothes on radiators, as this can add more moisture to the air. Instead, try using a drying rack near an open window.
  5. Keep the clutter under control - Make sure there’s a little gap between your furniture and the walls so air can circulate freely. Avoid having lots of clutter in your room as air circulation is key!
  6. Clean regularly - Cleaning and keeping an eye on your space will stop mould from having a chance to grow. If you notice any small patches of mould, then please contact us right away, so we can clean them off for you.
