So what exactly do ResLife Ambassadors do?
As ResLife Ambassadors, we help create a welcoming and supportive community within student accommodation. A big part of our role is running events. We come up with ideas, plan them, and then deliver them for students living on campus.
We also carry out household visits, where we regularly check in with students to see how they are settling in and if they need any support. If someone is struggling to make friends or adjust to university life, we are there to help and guide them.
On top of that, we get involved in marketing the programme. This includes writing articles and creating content for social media, such as Instagram. Overall, it is a varied role where we support students, run events, and help build a strong sense of community.
Do we get training before we start?
Yes, we do get training before we start.
Before beginning the role, we complete two days of in person training. During this time, we learn everything we need to feel confident and prepared. This includes understanding our responsibilities, learning about health and safety, and developing skills such as how to plan and run events, and how to carry out household visits.
By the end of the training, we feel well prepared and ready to begin, so we are not going into the role without guidance.
Does the ResLife programme run all year, or just during term time?
The ResLife programme runs all year round.
Our busiest times are in September and October, when new students arrive, and in February during the Semester 2 refresh. These are key periods where we run a large number of events and help students settle into university life.
However, the programme continues outside of term time as well. We still run events during holidays such as Christmas, Easter, and the summer, although the programme is slightly reduced during these periods. This means that if we are staying in Bath during the holidays, there are still opportunities to work and get involved.
What does a typical shift look like for you?
For me, a typical shift often involves running an event.
I usually arrive around ten minutes before the event starts to set everything up. This includes organising materials, preparing the space, and making sure everything is ready. Sometimes I also take photos to help promote the event on social media.
During the event, my main focus is engaging with students. I explain the activity, encourage people to take part, and make sure everyone feels comfortable and included. It is important to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere so that students can relax and enjoy themselves.
After the event, I help pack everything away and clean up the space. Overall, it is a very social and rewarding experience, especially when I see students enjoying themselves and connecting with others.
What is your favourite thing about being a ResLife Ambassador?
My favourite thing about being a ResLife Ambassador is the positive impact we have on students.
I really enjoy being part of the first few weeks at university, especially during welcome events. It is a great feeling to be one of the first people students meet and to help them settle in and feel more comfortable in a new environment.
I also find it really rewarding to help students build confidence, make friends, and feel like they belong. Whether it is through events, conversations, or support, it feels meaningful to know that I have helped improve someone’s experience.
Another highlight is working with other ambassadors. I get to meet people from different courses and year groups, which makes the role even more enjoyable.
Overall, it is a flexible role that works well alongside my studies, and it is very rewarding because I can see the difference I am making.
