Feeling homesick at university is completely normal. New city, new home, new people, and the lingering smell of pot noodle is nothing compared to your family Sunday roast.
So whether you're new to Bath or getting back into the swing of student life after a long break, here are Xander's top tips to working through your homesickness:
1. Decorate (or re-decorate) your room
Your bedroom is your most personal student space, which is why it's important to make it feel like home. Bring some items from home that make you feel happy and comfortable.
Why not add a funky pillow to your bed? Cosy up in a new throw? Add photos of family and friends to your pinboard? The possibilities are endless. These will remind you that home is closer than you think.
2. Get used to where you are
Step out of your room and into the gorgeous city of Bath! Taking the time to get more familiar with your surroundings can really help you feel more at ease.
Go for a run or walk around campus following our handy guide or take a look at things to do in the local area from free activities to the best roasts in the city.
3. Meet new people
Although it may be daunting at first, there are so many things you can do at university to find new friends - all it takes is a little effort on your end.
Offer to study with a course mate, spend time with your new flatmates and join a society to meet like-minded people with the same interests.
4. Stay connected
Use social media, phone calls, or video chats to keep in contact with your loved ones. Regular phone calls to your family and friends at home will always perk up a bad day.
If you do need support, don't be afraid to speak out. From our Student Support team to our Wellbeing Service, there are plenty of in-person, online and anonymous options available, so you can choose the right support for you.
Feeling homesick is totally normal, but it doesn't have to stop you from enjoying your student experience. Look after yourself and reach out whenever you need support - we're here for you.
