Perfectly imperfect

Mend. Make. Mindfully.

As part of Be Well Week, we’re inviting you to slow down, switch off, and try something beautifully meaningful at our Kintsugi Workshop.

Kintsugi is the traditional Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics; embracing cracks and imperfections rather than hiding them. In this calming, hands-on session, you’ll learn the basics of this mindful practice and carefully restore a piece using golden detailing - transforming something once considered broken into a unique work of art.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chipped or broken ceramics to repair, giving a personal item a new story and a second life. If you don’t have anything suitable, don’t worry, pieces will be provided so everyone can take part.

This workshop is more than just learning a new skill. Kintsugi carries a powerful message: flaws, cracks, and imperfections are not something to disguise, but something to honour. The process symbolises resilience, growth, and the idea that what we see as broken can still be beautiful and valuable.

Whether you’re looking to unwind during Be Well Week, try a new creative activity, or simply take a break from academic pressures, this session offers a peaceful space to reflect and recharge. No experience is needed, just bring yourself and a willingness to slow down and try something new.

Polden Commons is located on the ground floor of Polden B Block, next to the Polden Cafe. The room is fully accessible with steps free access and a range of both booth and table seats available. There are accessible toilets located on the same floor.

ResLife Ambassadors will be there to welcome you – you’ll be able to recognise them in their light blue RLA hoodies and t-shirts with the ResLife logo on.

This workshop is designed to be calm, reflective and unhurried. The atmosphere will be quiet and relaxed, giving you space to focus on the careful, mindful process of repairing your ceramic piece. You’re welcome to work independently, take your time, and engage in conversation only if you would like to.

Materials will be clearly organised and instructions will be provided both verbally and in written form. Step-by-step guidance and visual examples will be available, and ResLife Ambassadors will offer support throughout the session. You can follow the process closely or move at your own pace, whatever works best for you.

Lighting will be standard indoor lighting, and we’ll aim to keep background noise low. You’re welcome to wear headphones, take short breaks, or step away and return if needed.

There’s no expectation of perfection. Kintsugi is about embracing imperfections, and this workshop offers a gentle space to learn, reflect, and create in a way that feels comfortable for you.
