Fun and student-friendly!

Being a student in Bath doesn't have to be expensive, in fact, there is so much to see and do for free. From tourist attractions to green spaces, I guarantee there will be something for you. Check out the list below to find out what free things you can do in our beautiful city.

1. Visit the Roman Baths

Students can visit one of Bath’s most famous attractions for free. The Roman Baths were constructed between 60 and 70 AD in the first decades of Roman Britain, and have been well-preserved in the centre of Bath. I would highly recommend using the audio guides that are available in 12 languages to find out about the interesting history of the baths.

2. Explore the Bath Skyline Walk

Round up some friends or go solo on this 6-mile circular walk around the Bath Skyline. The walk boasts stunning views of Bath through wildflower meadows, woodland and farmland. If you don’t fancy the entire walk, my favourite viewpoints on the walk are from Sham Castle and Bathwick Fields. You can catch gorgeous golden sunsets at both of these places.

3. Visit the Royal Crescent

The Royal Crescent is another of Bath’s icons and it’s completely free to visit and observe. The Royal Crescent is considered one of the best examples of Georgian architecture in Britain, so it’s worth a visit. The large green space in front of it is a perfect place to go and read a book, chat with friends or have a picnic.

4. Attend ResLife Events

Meet other students living in halls at the free events hosted by our ResLife Ambassadors and the ResLife Support Team all year round. From Salsa dancing to cooking classes, there’s sure to be something for you. Check out the programme of events here. 

5. Watch BUCS sports every Wednesday

Cheer on your Bath athletes in their home matches in a variety of sports every Wednesday. Check out @SUBathSport on Instagram to find out the fixtures and where to watch them, make sure you come with your loudest cheers.

6. Sit in Kingston Parade

This is a personal favourite of mine when the sun’s out. Bring a book and perch on one of the benches to take in the stunning architecture of Bath Abbey in the summer sun. There will usually be a street performer in the centre of this square too so you can listen, watch or read whilst catching some rays.

7. Visit the Holburne Museum

This museum was Bath’s first public art gallery and it is free for University of Bath students. You will find fine and decorative arts built around the collection of Sir William Holburne, an officer of the Royal Navy back in the 1800s. You may also recognise this museum as Lady Danbury’s home in the hit Netflix series Bridgerton.

8. Explore one of the parks

Bath has some lush green parks which you can visit for free. My personal favourites are Royal Victoria Park for its space to play ball games and beautiful botanical gardens and Alexandra Park for its breathtaking views of the city. Other great free parks in Bath are Henrietta Park, Sydney Gardens and Alice Park.

9. Walk Along the Canal

The Kennet and Avon Canal runs through Bath and passes along some impressive architecture and more local landmarks. I would recommend walking during the day to catch the best views. You’ll spot ducks, canal boats and maybe some paddleboarders on the way. Check out this two-mile circular walk which runs along the canal and through town.

10. Visit Bath City Farm

Bath City Farm is a great free attraction, you’ll find farm animals but also nature trails and woodland. The farm is completely free to visit but they do accept donations.

11. Enjoy the sun at Warleigh Weir

Warleigh Weir is around a 30-minute walk from campus and is a great place to visit on a hot day. I recommend that you round up some of your friends, bring a picnic, a speaker and lots of water to stay hydrated.

12. Visit Dundas Aqueduct

Situated near Warleigh Weir, the aqueduct is another fun and free place to visit when it’s warm outside. Come here to enjoy a day in the sunshine with your friends.

13. Attend the Free Events in Freshers' Week

Freshers’ Week 2023 will be between 24th September and 1st October, even if you haven’t purchased a FW wristband there will still be several free activities for you to take part in. Check out the SU website to find out what’s on closer to the time.

14. Party in the City

Hosted by The Bath Festival, Party in the City is an annual free music event all across the city. Streets, parks, pubs and other venues in Bath host various musical acts covering an array of genres including acoustic, jazz, indie, choral, pop, folk and more.

15. Get Festive at Bath Christmas Market

Bath Christmas Market is held every year over the festive period. The main streets in Bath get transformed into a winter wonderland with over 170 chalets with food outlets and a range of crafts. You don’t need to purchase anything, it’s just such a magical atmosphere around with music, lights and festive spirit.

16. Attend Bath Carnival

This is another free annual event that takes place every summer. Expect music, dancing and bright colours at this big celebration in the city. It’s not to be missed!
