If you are used to spending Ramadan with family or friends at home, you may be wondering what it is like when you are living in halls of residence. This page covers practical information about events, support, and community so you can make the most of the holy month as a student in Bath.
Planning your fast
For many, being a university student comes with increased independence and academic responsibilities, which can affect your experience of Ramadan. If you are fasting, here is some key information to help you plan:
- Here are some nutritious recipes to help with planning food for your Suhoor and Iftar.
- Make sure to stock-up on the food you need - you can get dates from Fresh, along with other protein-rich foods and snacks.
- Lime tree serves hot meals up until 8pm if you're breaking fast on campus.
- Join us on 15 February in Green Park House and 18 February in Pulteney Court to decorate dates in the lead up to Ramadan, either for your own fast or as a gift for others. We’ll have ingredients for some favourite combinations, including chocolate chips, peanut butter, cream cheese, pistachio, and almonds.
- Make use of the prayer room in Norwood House as much as needed.
- Join our ResLife Henna Night in Polden Commons to celebrate after fasting.
Community
Being part of a supportive community is important, and will help make Ramadan meaningful and fulfilling. There are lot of ways to connect with others in Bath during Ramadan.
- The University of Bath Islamic Society (BUIS) offer lots of opportunities throughout the year to connect with other Muslim students.
- You can also engage with the wider Muslim community in Bath at the Al Muzaffar Bath Mosque (Bath Islamic Centre).
BUIS and the local mosque organise community Iftars throughout the month, and you can also organise group Iftars with others in your accommodation.
