I have some exciting updates about the community larder to share, about how its been improved and made even better for students.
Whether you have used it before or your brand new to the university and just finding out about it, now is the perfect time to visit, especially with the new changes for the year ahead, which include an additional larder in the city.
What is the community larder?
For those who haven't heard of the community larder, it is a shared space where students can donate items they don't want or need anymore, and pick up food, kitchenware, and homeware left by others—and it’s all completely free!
If you have food, homeware or clean kitchen items you no longer want or need, you can leave them on the shelves for someone else to pick up and use. If you need something and its on the shelves you can help yourself. Our larders are part of the Leave no Trace scheme; not only do you save money, but you also help our university community to live more sustainability. The larder on campus can be found by the exit of the Fresh shop.
What is new?
Thanks to funding from the amazing Advancement Office, five ingredients will be stocked on the shelves throughout the year.
Each week, there will be a recipe which matches these ingredients, making cooking more simple and affordable, and giving you some extra inspiration and help in the kitchen.
Whether you’re just getting started with cooking, or you’ve been experimenting with meals for years, you will have a tasty meal in no time. The recipes can be found here.
But the good news doesn’t stop there! We’ve also introduced a community larder in a brand new location - the Virgil Building café in the city.
This second larder will be open from 11am to 3pm Monday to Friday; this makes it even easier for everyone to access what they need, whether you’re on campus or in the city.
