Don't feel confident using the UK bus system? From pass types to payments, we've got you covered!
How to pay for your journey 🎟️
1. Cash
All buses accept cash, but I don't recommend using cash on the buses.
Not only does it hold up the line, but drivers usually don't like handling cash and giving out change. Try to go cashless unless it's your last resort.
2. Tap On/Tap Off
If you use the bus once in a while, tap on/tap off is the most convenient option. And on University services, this is the best way to pay as you will be capped at the student Bath Zone prices!
You simply tap your card when you get onto the bus and tap off when you get off. This will automatically charge you the correct amount depending on the number of trips you take in the day.
This is particularly a great option for students living on campus - those who visit the city rather infrequently.
3. Bus passes
You can purchase different types of bus passes online or via the First Bus app, including:
- day pass
- weekly pass
- monthly pass
- yearly pass
Before you buy, definitely look at your timetable and work out how often you'd need to use the bus so you can work out which pass is best for you.
Note: The bus company that operates services to the University of Bath, has recently removed the option to buy return tickets. This means that you’ll now need to purchase two single tickets if you want to make a return journey, which can be more expensive.
The First Bus app
By using the app, you can see bus timetables and plan your journey to find the best route for where you want to go, track buses live on the map and purchase and store tickets on your phone making it easy to scan and travel.
Top tips 🚌
- Signal for the driver to stop: Wait at the bus stop and put your arm out when the bus is approaching, otherwise the driver may not stop.
- Get student discount: If you have a valid student ID, you can get up to 10% discount on First Bus tickets purchases on the app or using tap on/tap off (on the U1, U2, U3, U4 and U5 services).
- Work out the best way to pay: By using the tap on/ tap off function, you'll automatically be charged the student fare on the Unibus services.
- Plan your route in advance: If you are using a bus service for the first time, it's a good idea to plan where to catch the bus and where to get off beforehand. This helps make sure you don't get lost and feel more confident before boarding. If you do get stuck, you can always ask the driver for help!
