5 ways to transform your accommodation into a cosy home

Welcome to your new home! Once you've settled in, you might start staring at your room and wondering what you could do to make it more cosy, more homely and more you. So take a break from the Pinterest boards and have a look at our suggestions.

1. Add a little bit of light

A desk and/or bedside lamp is pretty much essential when you're going to university. Not just to make it look cosy, but it'll make studying late or reading in bed a lot easier.

If you're really wanting to match the cosy season vibes, then fairy lights will be your best friend. String them over your bookshelves or even inside a nice vase on your windowsill. Just remember to use free-standing or non-adhesive LED fairy lights as we don't allow adhesive strip lights in accommodation.

2. Embrace the greenery

Having indoor plants has been a trend for a few years and in our opinion, it should continue. Not only do plants look great and add a splash of colour to any room, but they can also help improve the air quality. If you'd prefer plants that need minimal care, we recommend cacti, succulents or aloe vera.

3. Invest in your sleep

Sleep is really important during your studies, so making your bed the highlight of your room can be a quick win. Mixing up your bedding is an easy way to change up your room with new patterns and colours. Get yourself some cute cushions and blankets to keep you comfortable and warm - you can even match them to the seasons.

4. The keepsakes

When you move away to university, you're likely leaving behind a bedroom filled with sentimental photos and memories. Choose your favourite items to bring with you. You can place photographs on your pinboard or find some cheap standing frames in a nearby charity shop to put a smile on your face when you're missing your family and your friends. That way you can feel a little closer to them, and it might help with homesickness.

5. Colour coordinate

If you're unsure how to make your room feel more like 'you', then try focusing on certain colours and choosing your furnishings based on that. Blue and green are calming colours which work great around stressful revision periods, and yellow can be a mood lifter. Consider the colours that help to make you feel safe and comfortable, and incorporate these into your duvet, cushions and other bits and bobs that you bring along.

Add all of these different suggestions together, and you'll be well on your way to making your student accommodation into a home. And don't just focus on your room, get your flatmates together and come up with a decor plan for your shared spaces!
