A letter could change someone’s day.

Because no one should feel alone.

Celebrate University Mental Health Day with kindness, connection, and compassion at our Letters to Strangers event.

In a world where we all face ups and downs, a few supportive words can make a big difference. Inspired by the idea behind Reasons to Stay: write a letter to someone you’ve never met - a project where volunteers write anonymous encouraging letters to strangers, this event invites students to write short, uplifting messages of support. These letters will then be hidden around campus for others to find, offering a little unexpected encouragement to someone who might need it.

Whether you choose to write something hopeful, reflective, gentle or simply kind, your letter could be the surprise someone discovers on a walk between classes, a study break, or just a normal day on campus. It’s a simple way to promote connection and remind each other that we’re not alone. This activity reflects the spirit of University Mental Health Day, a national movement encouraging open conversation about student wellbeing and support across campuses.

If you can’t make the in-person event, you can still get involved by writing a letter here and helping support others in a meaningful way, because sometimes the smallest acts of care can have the greatest impact.

Join us, take a moment to reflect, share something supportive, and help spread a little kindness throughout our university community.

Green Park Living Lounge is located on the ground floor of the building, just right of the main entrance and across from the reception. The lounge is accessible with an automatic door and a sloped entrance for wheelchair users. There are a range of seats in the lounge including table seats, sofas, and high seats. There is lots of natural light from the multiple windows along the length of the lounge.

ResLife Ambassadors will be there to welcome you – you’ll be able to recognise them in their light blue RLA hoodies and t-shirts with the ResLife logo on.

This event is designed to be calm, welcoming and reflective. You’ll have a quiet space to sit and write at your own pace, with no pressure to share your letter or read it aloud. You can stay for as little or as long as you like.

Writing prompts will be available if you’d like guidance and all materials will be provided. ResLife Ambassadors will be nearby if you need support, but you’re free to work independently.

The atmosphere will be low-pressure and respectful, with a quieter area available for anyone who prefers minimal noise or stimulation. Whether you write a few lines or a longer message, your contribution will help spread kindness across campus in a way that feels comfortable for you.
