Hello and welcome back.
There are many places to find advice on how to prepare for exams, and much of that advice overlaps for a reason. A great deal of it is effective. However, as someone living in accommodation, I would like to share five practical tips that can make daily life easier during exam season.
1. Do your laundry in advance
Ensure that you have clean clothes ready before your exams begin. You do not want to worry about what to wear or deal with long laundry queues during a busy period. Planning ahead can remove unnecessary stress.
2. Plan your grocery shopping and include snacks
Try to shop in advance and, if possible, prepare some meals ahead of time. You may not be able to prepare for the entire exam period, but organising meals for even a few days can make a difference. It is also important to include snacks. Whether you are studying late, spending time in the library, or revising in a common room, having items such as fruit, granola bars, or other favourites can help maintain your energy. Buying these in advance is also more cost-effective than purchasing them daily.
3. Work with your natural routine
By this stage, you are likely to understand how you study most effectively. Whether you prefer mornings, late nights, the library, or a café, it is important to use what works best for you. The goal is to work smart as well as work hard. Making use of your natural routine can improve both productivity and focus.
4. Make a realistic plan
Once your exam timetable is available, create a revision plan. It is not possible to cover an entire semester in one day, but it is possible to break content into manageable sections over time. You may find it helpful to use the small noticeboard in your room or planner to organise your schedule. Set achievable daily goals and include small rewards to maintain motivation. This could be a snack, a short break, or something you enjoy after completing a task.
5. Try to enjoy the process
Exams are a natural part of academic progression. While they can be stressful, viewing them as part of your overall university experience can make the process feel more manageable.
Bonus tip
If you live in city accommodation, consider leaving early for your exams, as buses tend to be very busy during this period.
We at ResLife are wishing you every success during your exams.
