Games, Culture & New Year Cheer

Ring in the Lunar New Year early with us

Celebrate the season together at our Lunar New Year Games Night, a relaxed and welcoming evening to come together in the lead-up to the New Year. Whether you’re marking the occasion culturally, socially, or just looking for a fun way to spend time with friends, this event is a chance to unwind, connect, and enjoy games that are played and loved across different parts of Asia.

We’ll be featuring a range of traditional games from different cultures, with space to learn, watch, or jump in and play at your own pace.

One of the games will be Mahjong, a classic tile-based game with roots in China that is played across East and Southeast Asia. Mahjong combines strategy, memory, and pattern recognition, and is often enjoyed as a social game played around a table, making it perfect for both focused play and relaxed conversation.

You’ll also have the chance to try Yutnori, a traditional Korean board game commonly played during Seollal, the Korean Lunar New Year. Yutnori uses four wooden sticks instead of dice, with players working in teams to move their pieces around the board. It’s lively, interactive, and rooted in celebration and togetherness, making it a great group game to share with friends.

Plus, there will also be the chance to play Tiến lên, a popular Vietnamese card game often played during Tết, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year. Fast-paced and easy to pick up, Tiến lên is a shedding-style card game where the goal is to get rid of your cards before anyone else. It’s social, competitive in a friendly way, and commonly played among family and friends during New Year gatherings.

This event is all about celebrating culture and community, so join us for an evening of games, connection, and celebration as we welcome the Lunar New Year together.

Aquila Court social space is located through the main building entrance, next to the reception. There is an accessible toilet on the same floor and range of seating available, including both seats and sofas.

ResLife Ambassadors will be waiting there to welcome you, you’ll be able to recognise them in their light blue RLA t-shirts and hoodies with our ResLife Logo on.

You can expect a warm, welcoming atmosphere where celebrating the Lunar New Year meets a relaxed games night. The space will be set up for easy drop-in play, with tables for different games and a friendly, social vibe that makes it easy to join in or simply watch.

No prior experience is needed and rules will be explained, so you can learn as you play or take time to observe before joining in. Games will vary in pace and style, so you can move between tables and try something new whenever you like. If you are unsure or need to take a break at any point, ResLife Ambassadors will be on hand to help you

You’re welcome to come along with friends or housemates, or arrive on your own and join a group on the night. There’s no pressure to be competitive or stay for the whole event; feel free to dip in and out, chat, play casually, and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Above all, this is an inclusive celebration of culture, community, and the New Year.
