Friendship at first bite

Looking to make new friends without the awkward small talk? Grab a spoon, we’ve got you covered.

Introducing Cereal Speed Friending, the most a-maize-ing way to meet people on campus. It’s speed dating… but for friendship. And with cereal. Lots of cereal.

Here’s how it works: you’ll rotate around the room in quick, timed chats, meeting lots of new people in one fun session. No pressure, no cheesy pickup lines, just easy-going conversations with fellow students who are also up for a laugh and maybe a new study buddy or 2am snack-run companion. To keep things flowing, we’ll have cereal-themed conversation prompts on the tables so you can ask the important life questions like “Milk first or cereal first?”

There will of course be a full spread of cereals to snack on while you chat. Classic favourites and a few unexpected options will be waiting to fuel your social skills. Because nothing breaks the ice quite like debating whose bowl is superior.

Whether you’re new to university or just want to expand your circle, this is your chance to meet fellow residents in a relaxed, slightly silly setting. Come for the cereal, stay for the conversations, and leave with some new friendly faces.

Bowls, spoons, and good vibes provided. Just bring yourself.

Aquila Court social space is located through the main building entrance, next to the reception. There is an accessible toilet on the same floor and range of seating available, including both seats and sofas.

ResLife Ambassadors will be there to meet you. You'll be able to recognise them wearing their light blue hoodies and t-shirts with the ResLife logo on.

Cereal Speed Friending is structured, predictable, and designed to feel low-pressure.

When you arrive, you’ll be welcomed by event ResLife Ambassadors who can explain how everything works before you start. The event takes place in one room with tables set up around the space. You’ll be seated at a table and chat with one person at a time. Each conversation lasts a few minutes, and there will be a clear signal when it’s time to move to the next table. You don’t have to figure out when to stop or how to switch, the timing and movement are guided throughout.

There will be conversation prompt cards on the tables. You can use them if you’d like help getting started or ignore them if you’d rather talk about something else. It’s completely okay to keep things light, to talk about shared interests, or to say you need a moment to think. Everyone is there to meet new people, so you won’t be the only one feeling a bit unsure at first.

There will be some background noise from multiple conversations happening at once alongside some light background music. If you need a short break, you’re free to step out at any time and come back when you’re ready. ResLife Ambassadors will be there to help with anything you may need, and you can also arrive with a friend and stick together before and after the rotations if that helps.

There’s no expectation to share personal information, or to connect with everyone. Even one good conversation is a win. This event is meant to be friendly, a little bit silly, and welcoming to different communication styles, whether you’re super chatty, more of a listener, or somewhere in between.
