Learn and Celebrate for Trans Day of Visibility
Find the words that fit you
Join us for our Find the Words: Badge Making event; a relaxed and creative event celebrating Trans Day of Visibility. We’re inviting students to explore some of the words people use to describe their gender identity - and turn them into something you can wear with pride.
During the event, you’ll have the chance to learn about a range of terms commonly used by people within the trans and nonbinary community. Language around gender is constantly evolving, and many people use different words—or combinations of words—to help describe their identity to others.
After exploring some examples of these terms, you’ll be able to design and make your own badges. You might choose a word that resonates with you, create a badge inspired by a particular identity, or invent your own wording that feels right. There’s no right or wrong choice—this event is about expression, visibility, and celebrating the diversity of identities within our community.
Whether you’re curious to learn more about gender terminology, want to create something meaningful to wear, or simply fancy an inclusive creative break, everyone is welcome. By the end of the session, you’ll have your own handmade badge to wear for Trans Day of Visibility, or whenever you want to share your words with the world.
Green Park Living Lounge is located on the ground floor of the building, just right of the main entrance and across from the reception. The lounge is accessible with an automatic door and a sloped entrance for wheelchair users. There are a range of seats in the lounge including table seats, sofas, and high seats. There is lots of natural light from the multiple windows along the length of the lounge.
ResLife Ambassadors will be there to welcome you – you’ll be able to recognise them in their light blue RLA hoodies and t-shirts with the ResLife logo on.
This event is designed to be a relaxed and welcoming space where students can explore gender-related language and express themselves creatively.
During the session you’ll be able to learn about some of the words commonly used by people in the trans and nonbinary community, with information available to help you explore what different terms mean and how people choose to describe their identities. This information will be printed on cards and other resources around the room, so you are not under pressure to discuss your learning with anyone if you would not like to.
You’ll then have the chance to design and make your own badges using these terms, words that feel meaningful to you, or anything else you’d like to express.
The atmosphere will be informal and calm, with light background conversation and no loud music or flashing lights.
You’re welcome to work at your own pace, chat with others, or take time to reflect while creating your design.
All materials will be provided, and by the end of the session you’ll have your own badge to take away and wear whenever you want to share your words.
