Weaving together tradition and creativity

Celebrate Black History Month with a woven creation

Join our ResLife Ambassadors at Green Park House for a relaxed evening of basket weaving to celebrate Black History Month.

Basket weaving is a craft with deep roots in many African and African diaspora communities, passed down through generations as both a practical skill and an art form. From the coiled sweetgrass baskets of the Gullah Geechee people to woven traditions across West and Southern Africa, these crafts carry stories of heritage, resilience and community. This event is a chance to learn a little about that history while making something of your own.

You'll be guided step by step as you weave your own small basket to take home. It's a calming, hands-on craft that lets you slow down, switch off from studying and focus on one row at a time.

No experience needed, and all materials are provided. Whether you're a keen crafter or you've never woven anything before, you're very welcome to join us.

Green Park Living Lounge is on the ground floor of the building, just right of the main entrance and across from reception.

The lounge is accessible with an automatic door and a sloped entrance for wheelchair users. There is a range of seating, including table seats, sofas and high seats.

ResLife Ambassadors will be there to welcome you. You'll be able to recognise them in their light blue RLA hoodies and t-shirts with the ResLife logo on.

There will be some unstructured time at the start while people arrive. If you're coming on your own, our RLAs will happily introduce you to others or find you a seat.

RLAs will show you how to get started and guide you through each step, then you can weave at your own pace. All materials will be provided, and you'll take your basket home with you.

This is a calm, focused session. You can chat while you weave or keep to yourself, whatever feels most comfortable.

There is no structured break, but you're welcome to leave and re-join at any point. If you need a quieter spot, just let one of our RLAs know and they'll be happy to help.
