Step into the New Year together

Celebrate together

Celebrate the Lunar New Year with ResLife Ambassadors at our vibrant and welcoming event open to students of all nationalities. This celebration is all about coming together to mark the New Year through shared experiences, cultural exchange, and a sense of community. Whether Lunar New Year is part of your own traditions or something you’re curious to learn more about, everyone is welcome to attend this celebration.

There will be a series of activity stations, which you can explore at your own pace. You’re free to take part in as much or as little as you like, spending time at the activities that interest you most. Some stations may feel familiar and nostalgic, while others offer the chance to try something completely new:

At our game’s tables, you can play a variety of traditional card and board games that are commonly enjoyed during Lunar New Year celebrations. These include Mahjong, often played during Chinese New Year, Shi San Zhang (Chinese poker), Yutnori, a traditional game associated with Korean New Year, and Tiến lên, a popular card game frequently played during Vietnamese New Year. No experience is needed, and rules will be available so you can learn as you go or simply watch and enjoy the atmosphere.

If you prefer something creative, the craft table will offer felt animal decoration making inspired by the zodiac. Sew your own animal to hang in your accommodation. While the designs themselves are not tied to a specific tradition, they offer a fun and meaningful way to celebrate the zodiac or simply enjoy a hands-on craft activity.

Make sure not to miss our dessert dumpling table, where you can make your own sweet treat. This activity isn’t linked to a single tradition, but instead celebrates the shared joy of food, creativity, and togetherness that often accompanies New Year celebrations.

Plus, a sparkler station will be available for you to light sparklers and take photos. Everyone is warmly invited to wear traditional dress from your own cultures if you wish also!

This event is about celebrating diversity, sharing traditions, and welcoming the New Year together. Come with friends, meet new people, and enjoy an evening of games, food, creativity, and celebration as we welcome the Lunar New Year together.

Green Park Living Lounge is located on the ground floor of the building, just right of the main entrance and across from the reception. The lounge is accessible with an automatic door and a sloped entrance for wheelchair users. There are a range of seats in the lounge including table seats, sofas, and high seats. There is lots of natural light from the multiple windows along the length of the lounge.

ResLife Ambassadors will be there to welcome you – you’ll be able to recognise them in their light blue RLA hoodies and t-shirts with the ResLife logo on.

This will be a lively but relaxed celebration where you can explore Lunar New Year traditions in a way that suits you. The event will be set up with multiple activity stations, giving you the freedom to move around, take breaks, and choose how involved you want to be throughout the evening.

You’ll be able to drop into different activities, from trying out games and creative crafts to making a sweet treat or enjoying festive snacks. Instructions and guidance will be available at each station, so no prior experience is needed and you can learn as you go or simply observe.

The atmosphere will be social and welcoming, with students encouraged to celebrate their own cultures while discovering others. You’re invited to wear traditional dress if you’d like, take photos, and enjoy the festive touches around the space.

If at any point you are unsure or need a quieter space, please let on of our ResLife Ambassadors know who will be more than happy to help you.

Whether you stay for a short visit or spend the whole evening exploring, you can expect a friendly, inclusive environment focused on shared celebration, curiosity, and starting the New Year together.
