Using the washing machine in your kitchen

A washing machine makes it very easy to keep your clothes clean; some accommodation buildings have their own washing machine in the kitchen. 

To use the washing machine, you will need to first check that the drum is empty and clean before adding your clothes. Most washing machines will have a detergent drawer, usually with three compartments: prewash, main washing compartment, and softener. This is usually where you add liquid and powder detergents, but make sure to follow the instructions on the detergent packaging. There will also be a dial and various buttons to adjust the mode, temperature, and duration of the wash cycle.

Cleaning the washing machine

Keeping the washing machine clean will help avoid smells, and will lead to more effective washing cycles.

To clean the washing machine, wipe the door seals, door and drum with a damp cloth. Your washing machine may have a cleaning cycle, which can also be used to clean the drum. Carefully remove the detergent drawer using the instructions in the manual. Wash this with soapy, warm water, and leave to dry.

• Don't overload the machine. 
• Check the door seal and detergent drawer are clean before you wash your clothes.
• Make sure to leave the door slightly open after a wash will allow the drum to dry.
• Remove, and hang or dry clothes promptly after washing.
