Everything you need to know about living at John Wood

John Wood offers accommodation for undergraduate students in the vibrant Bath city centre.

You'll be close to cafes, restaurants, bars, high street shops, and entertainment, with a large supermarket just a short walk away. The Virgil Building, our student hub in the city centre, is only a seven-minute walk from John Wood.

The nearest bus stop is just a few minutes' walk away, providing convenient access to campus with a 15-minute journey on the U1 bus. For your safety and comfort, John Wood has a secure living environment with swipe card access to buildings and flats, along with a dedicated operations team.

In my accommodation

The size of your bed will depend on the type of room you're allocated. This will be on your room offer email. 


You will have been offered either:

  • standard WHB
  • small ensuite
  • ensuite


Ensuite room types have standard double bed (183cm x 140cm). Standard rooms and small ensuites have a standard single bed (183 x 91cm).

All rooms will have a mattress and mattress protector ready for you but you need to decide what you want to do about your bedding. You'll need:


    • Duvet cover, pillow case and sheet
    • Duvet and pillow


    Top tip - Check your bed size before making any purchases. 

     

    Want to skip the pre-move packing? We offer these items for purchase through our online store before you arrive, so they'll be waiting for you in your room (be sure to check out the terms and conditions).


    Need a temporary solution? You can loan bedding (duvet and pillow) when you arrive. If you borrow a set from your ResLife Ops Team you can make use of the Linen Exchange scheme - swapping your linen each week for a fresh set

    Want to personalise your space? Feel free to bring extra storage solutions like a shoe rack, packing cubes, and bins to keep your belongings extra organised.

    While you might want to bring all your kitchen gadgets, remember that you'll be sharing the space with your roommates. Talk to them about buying larger items like pots and pans. This saves space for everyone.

    Here's a helpful list to get you started:


    - Cooking essentials: can opener, frying pan for quick meals, and a saucepan.
    - Tableware: plates, bowls, and cutlery for meals.
    - Cooking tools: utensils like spatula, wooden spoon, and a sieve to help you cook.
    - Food storage: cling film, aluminium foil, and freezer bag to keep your food fresh.
    - Containers: tupperware to store your snacks and leftovers.
    - Kitchen essentials: oven mitts and dishcloths to protect yourself from heat and keep the kitchen clean.

    Traveling light? No problem!

    If you can't bring everything, or your trip is long, you can order these items from our online store before you arrive.


    Top tip - Need help using your kitchen appliances? Ask your ResLife Ops Team for help or a copy of the instruction manual. 

    Wash and dry with ease! Residents have access to washing machines and tumble dryers located right in John Wood Court.


    Your laundrette is located in the Living Lounge. You will need to pay for your laundry using the Circuit mobile plus app. Download on Apple and Android smart-phones.

    We know how important it is to stay entertained, so all our rooms are equipped with Wi-Fi, perfect for streaming. Since there are no traditional aerial points, you'll want to use a smart TV or connect a device to enjoy all the online entertainment options.

     

    Heads up! Don't forget to obtain your own TV license, which you can do online. You can easily get one online before you move in.

    You will have access to superfast WIFI. You will need your university username and password. Check out our guide to connecting to Wi-Fi on the University webpage. 

    It's a 25 minute cycle to campus, and there is bike storage available at John Wood Court located by the side entrance in the courtyard in between block F and John Wood Building.


    Please complete the bike registration form to be provided access. 

    Doing your part for the environment is simple at John Wood Court. Here’s what you need to know:

     

    You have bins that are for your recycling in your kitchens. These can then be taken to the main waste and recycling compound located by the side entrance in the courtyard in between block F and John Wood Building. Paper, cardboard, glass, cans, tins and plastic bottles can all be recycled.

    You can collect your mail from a passcode-protected mailbox located the bottom of each block. Your mailbox will be allocated by kitchen group. You receive your passcode with your arrival instruction.

    If you have a parcel to locate, we'll email your University email account to let you know we have it. You can collect your parcel from Green Park House. You will need to bring the email with you when you collect your item. You can either print it out or show it to us on your phone. You also need to bring photographic ID, preferably your University library card. 

    Addressing your mail or parcels: All mail and parcels for John Wood Court will be sent to Green Park House.

    It is important that you include your name, accommodation building and room number.

    For example if you live in J1.1 and your name is Joe Bloggs you would write the address as:  

    Joe Bloggs

    Bath 

    BA1 1AL

    Housemates

    You will be sent a link to a Unibuddy community app. Here you will be able to join your accommodation group, and find out who you will be living with. 


    Your Unibuddy invite will be sent out to your email address before you start your course in late August.

    Local amenities & travel

    The area is home to some of Bath's finest restaurants, cafes, and venues.


    With live music, events, and markets happening every week, the nearby Green Park Station is one of the best places to experience Bath.


    John Wood Building is also a 5 minute walk from Bath city centre with museums, shops and even more cafes.

    Your closest Post Office is on Union Streetand it's a 10 minute walk away. 


    You can also use InPost and Amazon lockers to drop off and collect parcels from. 

    You can find InPost locker locations here. 


    Amazon Lockers also offer a convenient way to pick up your Amazon orders.

    Your closest Amazon Locker is located in Green Park House, called "MIMSI". On Campus? Use Amazon Locker "BOSON", located just outside the exit of the Fresh supermarket.

    There are several bus stops located on the adjacent roads to John Wood Building. To get to campus you will need to get the U1 bus from Corn Street stop which is located a 3-minute walk from John Wood Building.


    Be sure to stay informed by checking the University timetable regularly.


    You can also get around using the e-scooter and e-bike scheme, operated by TIER. It’s a carbon-neutral form of transport that keeping Bath free from congestion and pollution. It’s quick and easy to use.  


    Look out for TIER's mint green e-scooters and e-bikes on parking stands. These will all be clearly marked on TIER's app. 


    Riders must have a provisional or full driving licence, and be at least 18 years of age to hire an e-scooter. Riders are always encouraged to wear helmets when using e-scooters and e-bikes. 

    The closest train station is Bath Spa which is a 10 minute walk away. 

    Bath City Centre is a 5-minute walk away.

    All major supermarkets deliver to John Wood Building, but the closest store is Sainsbury's which is a 4-minute walk away.

    On arrivals weekend, you will be able to download and print a parking permit for the Green Park Road Car Park. Parking is limited, and you will have 30 minutes to unload before moving to another car park in the city centre. Upon arrival, you must display your arrival time and a contact mobile number.
